Teaching philosophy

I always try to bring to my classes my knowledge and enthusiasm for the craft of writing, informed by theory about how people learn.

Together, we generate excitement about the possibilities of imagination and language.

I bring my experience as a professional writer and creative practitioner into my teaching, to inform and inspire the group. This approach is grounded by practical techniques and tips people can use to improve all their writing and research.

Whether it’s an intense weekend retreat or an online short course, we work with real case studies, practical techniques, hands-on exercises, and industry experience. Like my fiction, it feels real and immediate, but is subtly informed by research in how people learn, and how writing works.

Also there may be jokes.

And cake.

All of this (maybe not the cake) is based on pedagogical approaches of critical reflection, equitable access, constructive alignment, enabling peer feedback of writing, and continuous improvement of learning design on the basis of feedback.

I teach in the knowledge that many of us have faced all kinds of barriers to our past participation in learning and in publishing. That’s why I try to create a safe, supportive, hopefully fun environment in which people can thrive and get the support and knowledge they need.
